TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) - Tybee Island kicks off this Fourth of July weekend with health in mind.
On Friday morning, the Oceanfront Cottage Rentals hosted "Tybee Throws a Fit," at the Tybee Island pier.
People participated in a variety of fitness-related activities such as yoga, fitness classes and beach bocce.
"We are trying to show people that there is a lot to do on Tybee, that doesn't require a single nickle," said the owner of Oceanfront Cottage Rentals, Stacye Garrell. "If you have your bocce ball you can go play, if you want to play crochet or you want to swim in the beach, or you can go to the YMCA and participate in activities as well."
The event featured fitness expert and olympic trainer Michael Banks, and Savannah Native and Style Networks Ruby Gettinger.
Her trainers Shazia and Drew Edmonds of Train Me 24/7 were also on hand teaching people all the skills they need to get inspired to move.
"At first I could only walk five minutes," Gettinger said. "I was 716 pounds. Now, the things I love to do is boxing. I love dancing. I could dance everyday, all day long. I love it. You got to find something you love to do or you are not going to do it."
Ruby said anyone at any age and any size can get moving and feel better about life. At the event she showed her Women's Fat Night Dance routine to get people moving.
Organizers hope the event will inspire vacationers to stay fit this holiday weekend.
