Groundbreaking to mark new bridge project

Posted: Updated:

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Chatham County commisioners are breaking ground on a long awaited road improvement project.

The bridge over the Skidaway Narrows is 37 years old and it's the only land link between Skidaway Island and the mainland. The Georgia Department of Transportation labeled the bridge structurally deficient years ago.

Last year, the DOT awarded a contract to replace the Diamond Causeway bridge leading to Skidaway Island. It's a $22 million project. Work is expected to be completed by July 2013.

The groundbreaking will take place at the Rodney Hall boat ramp off of the Diamond Causeway at 3 p.m.
