Savannah-Chatham Metro Police car hits house

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police said an officer and a bystander were taken to Memorial University Medical Center after a police car crashed into a house Friday morning.

Police said the officer was enroute to back up another officer with a foot chase.

Officer Heffner and Demery Clark, 52, of 818 West 52nd St. were treated after the police car hit the house next door and ended up on the front porch of a second house where Clark was sitting.

Lt. K.L. Patton said Heffner was on West on 52nd Street and passing another vehicle just past Bullock Street when the vehicle struck a curb, went airborne, hit a utility pole and the front porch of a house at 912 West 52nd St., according to police. The car came ended up on its side on the porch of 818 West 52nd St., where Clark was sitting.

Heffner complained of chest pains. Patton said that Clark was transported to the hospital for observation after exhibiting signs of anxiety, according to a news release.

West 52nd Street was blocked off while the investigation was conducted. It has since been reopened.
