SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Chatham County commissioners are celebrating the opening of a new Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Animal Control facility.

The state-of-the-art facility cost $2.5 million dollars to build.

Chairman Pete Liakakis says he hopes to increase awareness about responsible pet ownership and to encourage pet adoptions of sprayed and neutered pets.

Each year about 4,000 dogs and cats are euthanized.

"We'll keep the dogs and cats for a longer period of time instead of extenuation," said Chairman Liakakis. "When you see them your heart starts beating fast and you say o boy I would love to have that dog or cat."

The new multi million dollar facility is equipped with a dog run, automatic water feeders, wash areas and pull down beds.

"This is a dream come true, Chatham county has a lot to be proud of, this is a state of the art facility probably one of the best, if not the best in the country," said Lieutenant Brenda Boulware.

Animal Control hopes that people just visit the site so that others pets can weasel their way into a loving families heart.

The new facility is in desperate need of dog walkers and volunteers for information on how to help visit their site.
