School Board Does Away with Zero Tolerance Proposal

Beaufort County School Board members did away with a zero tolerance disciplinary proposal that first got a lot of attention in December.

In order to keep the schools in the district safe, the board approved a disciplinary policy allowing the superintendent and district officials to use their own judgment in punishing disruptive students.

The policy is less harsh than the one proposed last year which stated students bringing guns to school, assaulting an employee or committing arson would have been immediately expelled.

"The expectations are we want to make sure we have a safe environment, that's conducive to learning and one shoe doesn't fit all," said School Board chairman Fred Washington, Jr.

Officials tell us, while this policy is different from the zero tolerance proposal, they will not tolerate disruptive students and are considering a number of alternatives for those causing problems.
