Ports Welcome Four Huge Cranes

Posted: Updated:

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Savannah and the Georgia Ports Authority welcomed in some pretty big machinery today. Dozens of people gathered on River Street to watch the vessel Swift carry four cranes to the ports.

Fully assembled, the cranes are approximately 480 feet long, weigh 1,369 tons and rise 367 feet above the water with a 34-degree incline.

A company in Finland designed them and China shipped them to Savannah. The trip up the river created an optical illusion for some spectators as the equipment passed underneath the Talmadge Bridge. The sight of something so big so close amazed those watching.

"I know it was going to be a huge thing but I didn't expect it to be that huge," said spectator Chris Ganas.

The Coast Guard escorted the Swift from the sea buoy to Garden City Terminal with helicopters and water craft.
