Broken window facing Drayton Street.
Only took one laptop that was sitting on the desk.SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - When the power went out and we were all in the dark Saturday night, somebody took advantage of the situation. They broke into a place that helps a lot of people who really need it, and this burglary is really setting them back.
The Savannah Association of the Blind serves hundreds of people every year. Inside the center there's not much. A few computers is about it, so they never dreamed they would be a target for thieves.
"It's very frustrating," said Tammy Johnson with the Savannah Association of the Blind. "Knowing that we're a small agency and money is very hard to come by, so anything that's gone, especially a computer, is a nightmare."
Johnson said it all happened Sunday morning during the blackout. Someone broke out a window and stole the laptop that used to sit on the desk.
Johnson thinks it was probably some kids, just looking for some easy money. Whoever it was and why they did it doesn't matter. All Johnson knows is that now this nonprofit is in even more of a bind than it was before.
"We're losing funding," he said. "Our biggest contract is through the state and states are being hit hard and there's not enough money to go around."
While a stolen laptop and broken window may not sound like much to a lot of people, for this nonprofit it could mean whether or not they can still provide the services that so many people rely on.
The Savannah Association for the Blind serves 29 counties and has really been going through some very tough times financially lately. The association can really use your help with old computers, computer software or money. Administrators say no donation is ever too small.
