SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - For 17 years, Wanda Randolph has introduced a variety of creative projects for students in her family and consumer science course at DeRenne Middle School.

"The kids love to make something where they don't have to spend a whole lot of money," said Randolph. "Just look around the house and see what you have that you no longer want and bring it in and we can make something new. This semester we're going to be making some bedroom slippers and some purses."

Randolph considers her class to be a step above the traditional home economics course.

You can find a washer and dryer in here, sewing machines, and a furnished kitchen. But you also see computers, as she helps to take her students into the age of technology.

She says she wants them to be prepared, not only for the future, but now.And that's why she keeps everything they may need in her classroom.

"I keep uniforms," said Randolph. "I keep belts. I keep shoes and food. A lot of kids come and they really want a little snack because they really don't have enough. If they come in private, we keep food back here in the back."

So for preparing her students for the years to come, as well as taking care of their needs in the present, Wanda Randolph is this week's WTOC Top Teacher.
