SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The NAACP Savannah Branch marked the anniversary of a terrible crime that took the lives of four young girls 45 years ago.
Today people came together to pray at Saint Philip Monumental AME Church and remembered the young victims who died in 1963 when someone set a bomb at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL. All four girls were under the age of 15.
NAACP members said they helped set the stage for many advancements in the Civil Rights Movement and showed how people needed to live.
"So my message to young people today is to become involved in your church, in the political process, in our schools. get involved," said Richard Shinhoster, Vice President, Savannah Branch NAACP.
The crime went unsolved for over ten years until a career criminal named Robert Chambliss was tried and convicted for the bombing.
