RICHMOND HILL, GA (WTOC) - As Susan Knauff's 4th grade students prepared to take a test, little did they know they were about to receive some exciting news that their teacher is a WTOC Top Teacher.
But of course, she's always been special in their eyes.
Knauff has been teaching for 34 years, these last few at George Washington Carver Elementary School.
"It's just fascinating to watch them catch on to things and the things I learn from them," said Knauff.
And from her, the students learn language arts, science and math.
She likes to have fun with her students. "I do play kickball with them occasionally," said Knauff. But she admits, she can be tough.
"I just want them to work to their full potential, and it just drives me crazy if they're not, and I just stick with them," said Knauff. "I keep working with them just as hard as I can until I feel that they have done the best that they can do."
"Mrs. Knauff is one of the best teachers I know because she helps us when we need help and she tells us all the directions before we do work," said student Gracie Hamilton.
But they'll only have her directions for a few more months. Knauff is retiring in December and taking on a new role.
"I'm getting married December 20 to a wonderful man from Hilton Head," said Knauff.
So for pushing students to success for more than three decades and having a ball while doing it, Susan Knauff is a WTOC Top Teacher.
"I'm still stunned," said Knauff. "I'm shaking inside."
