METTER, GA (WTOC) - For millions of people, Metter has always been the earthly office of a heavenly minded man. Even the city water tower proclaims it the Home of The Sower.

For more than 50 years, Reverend Michael Guido spread his Christian message from Metter like seeds all around the world.

"You don't go too many places and mention Metter that somebody doesn't want to know something personal about The Sower," explained longtime friend Ellis Wood, president of the Guido Evangelistic Association board of directors.

Dr. Guido's passing at age 94 left many mourning his death but celebrating his amazing ministry. As a nightclub bandleader in the 1930's, Michael Guido wandered into a revival service to hear the piano player and found the faith that would mark the rest of his life.

After seminary, he and wife Audrey traveled the country preaching to crowds large and small. But a car crash nearly killed them and retired them from the road. They turned then to radio and television to continue their ministry.

Wood said the ministry would continue even in his funeral.

"He made it clear to us that he wanted this to be a worship service that brings glory and honor to God and not be focused on him," Wood noted.

The service will be Sunday in a tent on the grounds of the Guido Gardens, just like one of Reverend Guido's old fashioned revivals. By Sunday, there may not be enough Kleenex in Metter for the tears of those of us touched by The Sower.

Through all his worldwide ministry, he remained a humble servant.

"If you called in the evening, up until the past few months when he was sick, the person that answered the telephone was Mr. Guido," said Wood.

Wood said the man who made Metter world famous was finally home.

Visitation will be Saturday at the Guido Gardens on Highway 121 North in Metter from 10 am until 8 pm. The funeral service will be Sunday at 3pm in the Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Guido Evangalistic Association.
