Chambliss Credits President, Organization with Victory

It was another republican victory, as challenger Saxby Chambliss defeated incumbent Senator Max Cleland of Georgia. The race was a close one, and Chambliss' victory is crucial to the GOP's bid to reclaim control of the senate.

"Certainly the president played an integral part in the campaign," said Chambliss. "When you have a popular president, that adds a lot, but what won this campaign was grassroots organization."

President Bush called Chambliss from his private quarters at the White House last night to congratulate the GOP lawmaker on beating Cleland.
