SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The day started bright and early with the Sinn Fein Society's breakfast, and the burning of the grits. Not just any grits, word has it that these green grits were flown in all the way from Ireland just for the Sinn Fein members.

President of Sinn Fein Society Butch Lowenthal says this is the 47th year for the burning of the grits and is always lots of fun and a great way to start the St. Patrick's day festivities.

"This is a great day to honor our patron saint," said Lowenthal. We think it's a wonderful day."

The burning of the grits has been a tradition for this group since 1965. This year they honored members of the military.
