SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - For hours the Saint Patrick's Day parade wound through Savannah, finding a spot just to watch not easy.
The squares filled up early and finding a good view on the street was not likely. It was a scene that caught locals by surprise.
"I really wasn't," said one Savannah man about the crowds, "Not until I started driving here and saw all the crowds that's when I started realizing it was going to be crowded and it was."
Many weren't expecting as many people, since the parade fell on a Tuesday. The throngs even surprised the people who put on part of the party.
"This is probably one of the biggest Tuesdays," said Chris Foran, Program Coordinator for Savannah Leisure Services.
Foran would know. He's attended this parade for more than forty years now. "There were sections of the parade that usually have a small number of people, but this year there were no spots along the parade route that I can remember that weren't three or four deep."
The official numbers aren't in yet, and we may never really know how many people showed up; but they're confident, that compared to other Tuesday parades, this one leads them all.
"Loved it, loved it, loved it, we'll be back next year!"
