WILMINGTON ISLAND, GA (WTOC) - There are a lot of great things going on at St. Peter the Apostle school on Wilmington Island.
And the students there value giving back to their community which is just one of the reasons why St. Peter the Apostle is so cool.
Toothbrushes, toothpaste, coloring books and toys. All of these are the basics for any child.
And that's why third and fifth graders at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School has bought and collected all of these items for children in our community.
It's all part of a service learning project called Pillow Pals. Each pillow case of goodies will help out children who end up in state care.
"This is part of the United Way Hands on Savannah. They are for children who leave their home in a hurried atmosphere and when they can't bring their belongings with them," said Cathy Wiederhold of St. Peter the Apostle. "This gives them the feeling this is mine and I am not uprooted."
Students stuffed everything they collected into pillow cases and just knowing that it might make a child their age smile, makes them smile.
"The teachers and the parents and the kids care for each other and their community and they want to share it with others all the time," said Wiederhold.
all these pillow cases lined up will be going to the department of family and children services, who will distribute them.
"We are doing this to keep children who are taken from their homes for family situations and family can't supply needs for them," said student Raina McCloud.
Giving back to the community is part of the schools curriculum.
"They need to be aware there is a lot going on in the world that they need to show Christian, Catholic values towards other people," said Wiederhold.
And this is something the students love doing.
"I know if I was in foster care, I would want something to call my own," said student Spencer Fonseca.
It may be just a toothbrush and a few other toiletries to some, but to the children who get these pillowcases, it's much more than that.
Students do service projects like Pillow Pals throughout the year. Just one of the many things that makes St. Peter the Apostle a cool school.
