Suspect in custody linked to Vaden Nissan car thefts

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Savannah-Chatham police have been hot on the trail of suspected thieves who they say stole as many as 13 cars from the Vaden Nissan dealership on Abercorn Street.

It all happened between Saturday night and Monday morning (see Police: Total of 13 vehicles taken from Vaden Nissan).

In 24 hours, police have one suspect in custody and have recovered four cars. But police say the investigation is far from over.

Savannah-Chatham police recovered one of the stolen Nissan vehicles Tuesday morning.

"The car was abandoned by three males after a short pursuit by officers who were able to catch one of the males," Lt. Gene Harley told WTOC.

Harley says the other two suspects are still at large. As police canvassed the nearby Hampstead Street neighborhood, they discovered other suspicious activity and took in two suspects for an unrelated crime.

Harley says time is running out for the suspects who stole the 13 used cars from Vaden Nissan on Abercorn Street.

"It's a big puzzle with at least 13 pieces and several sets of keys," Harley said.

Originally, the dealership reported ten stolen cars and multiple sets of keys (see 10 cars stolen from Savannah dealership). The number went up Monday night.

"They were able to fully complete an inventory and realized three additional cars were stolen during that time," Harley said.

Investigators have been scouring each recovered vehicle for clues and evidence while K-9's and police efforts moved to a different neighborhood where the suspects may be hiding. Harley says police work and community tips have paid off so far.

They hope it solves the crime soon. "We're going to do what we're here to do and ultimately bring them to justice," he said.

Jane Vaden Thatcher tells WTOC this has never happened before at this dealership. She says what happened isn't slowing business at all. They are cooperating with police and have taken extra safety measures.
