Christmas may still be two weeks away, but Santa's helpers are getting an early start. More than a dozen Georgia mayors are caravaning to deliver some Christmas cheer to the Georgia Regional Hospital. Santa Claus himself is even going along. Communities from around the Coastal Empire collected hundreds of gifts to bring to the patients. For many, these are the only presents they'll get.
"Some don't have any relatives and they have to spend the holidays in the hospital, so we bring these gifts for the kids right on up to the older people," said Walter Parker, the mayor of Tybee Island.
The hospital staff will wrap the gifts and deliver them on Christmas day.
They still need shirt and coat boxes and wrapping paper.
