SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The government's new car allowance rebate system, cash for clunkers, officially starts Friday.
Consumers can get up to $4,500 off the purchase or lease of a new vehicle if they trade in their old gas guzzlers.
The trade-in must have an EPA gas mileage rating of 18-miles-per-gallon or less. The vehicle must be less than 25-years-old, in drivable condition, registered and insured by the same owner for a full year.
Consumers will have until November 1 to take advantage of the deal or until the federal funds run out.
