A spokesman with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation tells us one armed man came into the TA Travel Center in Richmond Hill and robbed the clerk of an undisclosed amount of cash. Richmond Hill police were notified during the crime and raced to the scene.
Officers spotted the suspect running and gave chase on foot. The suspect was running to an old model brown car police believe was to be used as a getaway vehicle, located behind the Econo Lodge, about a quarter mile from the business. The officer caught up with the suspect, identified himself as a police officer and demanded the suspect drop his weapon. At this time the suspect turned, threatening the officer. The officer, believing his life was in danger, fired and killed the suspect.
A second man was apprehended at the Econo Lodge, where authorities believe he was waiting for his suspected accomplice. He was taken into custody and is currently in the Bryan County jail.
The GBI is handling the investigation because it involves a shooting death by a uniformed police officer. As standard procedure, the officer will be on limited duty pending investigation of the shooting. No names have been released; further details will be released as the investigation continues.
