We have an update to Friday's story regarding the shooting death of an armed robbery suspect by a Richmond Hill police officer. Authorities say, shortly before 2am Friday morning, 17-year-old Jayme Lamont Grate of Midway robbed the TA Travel Center on Highway 17, getting away with a substantial amount of money. Grate ran from the scene, pursued by Richmond Hill police.
The chase ended at the Econo Lodge about five minutes later, when Sgt. Mark Rich demanded Grate drop a rifle he used in the holdup. Witnesses say after repeated orders to drop the gun, Rich shot Grate, who died a short time later at Memorial Health.
Police arrested 19-year-old Thaddeus Antoine Miller, who was sitting in what police believe was to be the getaway car. Both suspects are from Midway.
Sgt. Rich is on administrative leave with pay, a standard procedure when an officer shoots a suspect. Miller is in the Bryan County jail charged with armed robbery.
