Around 9pm last night, 45-year-old Ola Brown's car and a pickup driven by Savannah Alderman David Jones smashed into each other on top of a viaduct at West 52nd Street and Ross Road. Jones had been heading west, Brown east, and Savannah police tell us the head-on collision occurred in the westbound lane. Brown, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene. Jones had been wearing his seatbelt and an ambulance rushed him to Candler with non-life-threatening injuries. Police have not filed any charges at this time.
We spoke with Jones' family this afternoon and they tell us he is still on medication and recovering, still very much in shock from the accident.
The overpass is only two lanes, and a pretty tight squeeze. Savannah police say blood tests will be performed on both drivers and sent to the GBI crime lab in Savannah for analysis, but it could be as long as two months for results. Charges are pending those results and the investigation of the traffic investigations unit.
Alderman Jones represents the First District on Savannah's city council.
