STATESBORO - (WTOC) Holding the Western Carolina offense to minus 12 yards rushing, the Georgia Southern defense turned in a record-setting performance as the Eagles won their Southern Conference-opener 27-3 over Western Carolina.
In the first series for Western Carolina, GSU'S Darius Eubanks set the tone with a sack of WCU's Zach James.
On the Eagles possession, Adrian Mora capped the drive with a 31 yard field goal to give GSU the 3-0 lead.
Late in the first, the GSU defense made its presence known once again when Darrell Pasco intercepted Zach James in the endzone to keep WCU off the board.
Lee Chapple completed passes to Jamire Valentine and Garryon Taylor to give the Eagles a 17-0 lead at the half.
The Eagles held WCU to a field goal in the second half, winning their first SoCon Opener in five years.
