Backus Cadillac closes its doors

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Backus Cadillac has been doing business on Victory Drive for more than five decades but Thursday, the dealership closed its doors for good.

The Backus family confirmed that this closing is the result of the General Motors bankruptcy. The Backus family also wanted to thank their customers for 55 years of loyalty and support.

Meanwhile, former employees expressed their fondness for the company and the family that ran it.

"It was just a good feeling in the '50s and '60s for us because it was a great automobile, great customers," said former service manager Ron Fornby. "The Backuses were fine people. Mr. Backus gave me the opportunity."

"I'm afraid things have changed an awful lot in the last few years and I think with the closing of Backus, we can really see what's happened to the economy and how bad people are really hurting," said former switchboard operator Linda Pinckney.

The Backus name will live on in the Coastal Empire at the Backus Children's Hospital and with the family's other charitable works.
