DHEC opens H1N1 clinics

HARDEEVILLE, SC (WTOC) - The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control is starting mass H1N1 clinics at several locations throughout the Lowcountry.

Until opening the clinics, DHEC has given out 27,000 vaccinations in their four-county region.

"We're very pleased with that," said Nick Davidson with DHEC Region 8. "That goes a great distance to protect the community from a very deadly illness but we would like to see more."

That's why they started the clinics throughout the area, opening two clinics Thursday, including one at Palmetto Electric near Sun City.

"They can't always get to a Health Department easily and quickly and we thought we'd spread into a number of facilities around the county and come to the people," said Davidson.

Many people like Doris Randall who live in the Sun City area, are rolling up their sleeves and taking advantage of this opportunity.

"I figured between my age and everything else, I figured it was time to get a flu shot," said Randall. "I think everyone should get one."

"We're going to be caught a lot of people on a cruise ship and therefore I thought it would be a good idea," said Bruce Tennant.

"I came because I'm having surgery next week and my doctor recommended I get it so here I am," said Nancy Volk.

While many say they would have traveled farther to get the vaccination, having a clinic so close is great.

"It makes it convenient, very convenient," said Patrick Cain.

In the first hour of opening, DHEC vaccinated about 50 people and most say they were in and out in minutes.

"Less than ten minutes, it can't get any better than that," said Trisha Barrett.

"I didn't feel it, it was excellent," said Randall.

By the end of the day, DHEC is expecting to vaccinate 250 to 300 people against the H1N1 virus at this clinic alone.

DHEC will be holding clinics throughout the Lowcountry for the next couple of weeks.

See below for a list of times and locations:

In addition to the mass clinics, all the Health Departments in Region 8 will be having extended hour clinics during January.
