SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - It's going to take a lot of help to rebuild Haiti and Friday night many of you came through! Donating thousands of dollars to the Savannah Chapter of the American Red Cross, earmarked for Haiti.
WTOC started our live coverage at 4 pm and the phones immediately starting ringing off the hook.
"We've had calls from Ludowici, Reidsville, Ridgeland South Carolina, Flemming Georgia, ten or eleven cities I'm taking calls from," said volunteer Marty Jones.
Jones said he wasn't expecting a response like this when he came in to help. "As soon as I put the phone down, before I can grab the paperwork, I've got another call," said Jones.
Even Robin White, who was tallying the totals, couldn't believe what she was seeing. "There have been some very generous donations: some as much as $1,000 for a single person, $100, $10 donations. They're all adding up," said White.
And then the donation, no one could believe. Enmark presenting the American Red Cross a check for $10,000 live on WTOC.
"I've never seen anything quite like that in real life," said Jerry Morris with Enmark about the devastation in Haiti. "I think you just watch TV and see the people, you feel like you need to do something."
So they did, and encouraged other businesses in our area to do the same.
For the next hour after the check presentation the phones kept ringing, White kept totaling, until she finally reached a number she had to share with everyone. "I just wanted to report we have $28, 001," said White to a cheering crowd.
They thought that number was high, but moments later they broke the $30,000. All the money is going straight to Haiti where it will be put to good use.
The Red Cross still has to tally the checks people are sending and the donations coming through the internet, so that $30,000 is going to keep going up. We'll let you know when the final numbers are in.
