SAVANNAH, GA - The bidding process for the construction of the final phase of the Truman Parkway is almost complete.

The Atlanta based company Balfour-Beatty won the bid during an opening on the contract held at the State Department of Transportation office.

There is a 30-day waiting period until the company will be officially awarded the contract for the Truman Project.

In the meantime , Chatham County commissioners are urging the DOT to hire local contractors to work on the project.

The bid was lower than the $128 million that was granted by the DOT to finish the parkway.

"The cost on that particular contract was lower than we thought it would be," said Chatham County commissioner chairman Pete Likakis. "That is because of the economy being slow right now, but it is a good construction company and there might be some change orders. We are glad that is in process and we should see some work in the very near future for the Truman Parkway."

Chairman Liakakis says construction on the Skidaway Island bridge will also begin within the next couple of months.

In addition, the county expects to begin taking bids for the jail project in February.
