Students collect school supplies for children in Haiti

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - A community is pulling together to help the children devastated by the earthquake in Haiti and they're doing it one backpack at a time.

Children from schools all over Hilton Head Island are coming together, each doing their part to help fill backpacks with school supplies and essentials for the children at a school and orphanage in Haiti.

"We gathered money and we went to Walmart and bought some stuff for the kids," said student Jordan Sugg.

Students from the Hilton Head Island School for the Creative Arts are also collecting all kinds of supplies.

"School supplies, soaps, clothes," said student Arianna Serpe.

And students from Hilton Head Prep are raising the money to buy the backpacks that will hold all of the supplies.

"We've done bake sales every Friday and we had a dress down day when we excepted donations," said student Alison Fredrick.

But these students aren't the only ones helping out. Diane Fornari who started the project, says the whole community is pulling together.

"It's been overwhelming, every day I'm brought to tears with someone calling with interest and saying thank you for letting us help," said Fornari.

Fornari is hoping she and her sister will be actually be the ones to deliver these backpacks to the children of Haiti this spring.

"I hope they get a ray of happiness and I hope it's a message that other people care about the children," said Fornari.

And by working together, students are hoping to make life better for the children of Haiti.

"It's just good to know we'll be making a difference in someone's life and we wanted to reach out to students especially since we're students too," said student Emily Blackshire.

Through this project, Olivia Gary from Hilton Head Island IB added her own touch, collecting Beanie-Baby stuffed animals to help bring the children comfort.

"They just seem so sad. They have nothing and I just thought they might want something to hold onto," she said.

And soon thanks to all of these helping hands, they will.
