Rare snowfall hits Savannah

Posted: Updated:

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Normally known for mild winters, Savannah is seeing its first snowfall in 14 years.

Snowflakes mixed with rain drifted into the coastal city Friday night. Some heavy flurries were possible as temperatures dropped overnight. Police urged drivers to be extra careful.

The National Weather Service included Savannah in a winter storm warning covering most of Georgia. Forecasters say 1 to 3 inches could fall in the coastal city.

How rare is snow in Savannah? Normally, temperatures in February don't dip below 41 degrees.

The last snowfall on record in Georgia's oldest city was two-tenths of an inch in February 1996. It's been two decades since Savannah had any notable accumulation, with 3.6 inches falling in December 1989.

The snow shouldn't stick around long. Temperatures in Savannah are forecast to climb into the 40s Saturday.
