GA Senate approves English only driving exams

Posted: Updated:

(WTOC) - The Georgia Senate approved a measure that would require permanent residents of Georgia to take their driver's license exams in English.

The chairman of the Public Safety Committee says the proposal could be an incentive for immigrants living in Georgia to learn English and would give them a basic understanding of the language that's necessary while driving.

Opponents say the bill is a hostile, anti-immigration measure that could hurt economic development in the state.

Georgia currently offers the driver's license test in 13 languages and will give the exam orally to anyone who can't read.
