Fish Fry to Support the Troops

How would you like to help our troops overseas and enjoy a good old-fashioned fish fry at the same time? The Palmetto chapter of the American Red Cross and Am-Vets Post 70 in Port Royal, South Carolina are teaming up this weekend for a tasty fundraiser. The proceeds will buy much-needed items for the troops, from toothbrushes to music CDs.

"What we're hoping to do is let all of our troops serving in the Middle East know how much we love and support them," the Red Cross' Warren Alston said.

The fish fry is this Saturday from 11am to 5pm at Am-Vets Post 70 at 1831 Ribaut Road in Port Royal. The fish dinners cost $5 and you can also donate items for our troops. There will also be a blood drive at same location from 11am-4pm. Here's a list of suggested quality of life items to donate:

  • Individually wrapped pieces of candy (no homemade items)
  • No chocolate bars or candy
  • Microwavable popcorn
  • Peanuts, pretzels, other snacks
  • Kool-aid, Gatorade, coffee, creamer, teas, hot chocolate
  • Razor, shaving cream, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shower gel, soap, hand lotion
  • Wet wipes
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Batteries
  • Greeting cards
  • Videos, CDs, cassettes
  • Small board games
  • Recent paperback books
  • Puzzle books, comic books
  • Holiday decoration
