A law enforcement officer has apparently been hit by a car fleeing the scene of a drug bust at the Day's Inn motel off Abercorn Street on Savannah's Southside. Police tell us they went to arrest one of the suspects, when another broke away used his car, a Monte Carlo, to get away from the officers, hitting one, jumping a curb, then heading north on Abercorn.
"He was taken to the hospital," said Savannah PD spokesman Bucky Burnsed. "When he was taken from the scene, he was conscious and alert, and was talking with the other officers."
Undercover officers were working an apparent drug operation at the motel. Burnsed told us the fleeing suspect hit an as-yet-unidentified officer.
"Attempting to get away from the officers, he struck an officer with his vehicle," said Burnsed. "I believe that to be a county officer. I don't have his ID yet."
With the officer on the way to the hospital, police focus their attention on finding that suspect.
"That vehicle was followed to the Paradise Park area, that's where a rather exhaustive search is going on as we speak," said Burnsed. "As to where this guy is, every effort is being made to find him."
WTOC is told that search is very intensive, involving K-9 units and officers from the Chatham Narcotics Team, Chatham County police, and Savannah police.
The Day's Inn is not letting any of its guests inside until the police forensics teams finish working the scene. We'll have more on this story as it develops.
