Verizon Heritage taking another green step

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - If you head out to the Verizon Heritage Golf Tournament this week, you're going to notice something a little different.

Waste Management and the Tournament are partnering to demo some new state of the art solar powered trash and recycling compactors. They'll have six compactors spread out throughout the course. While they may look pretty ordinary, you won't believe what they can do.

"It holds about five times as much as normal trash cans but the neat thing is, it calls you when it's full so you don't send folks out to pick up a trash can that's half full or a quarter full," said Russell Hightower, waste management. "This one calls you when it is ready."

When the unit reaches capacity, sensors trigger an internal solar powered compactor that flattens the contents.
