RICHMOND HILL, GA (WTOC) - In an emotional tribute to their son, the family of Marine Corps Captain Matt Freeman handed out the very first scholarship in his name to a senior at his alma mater, Richmond Hill High School.
You may remember Captain Freeman was killed last August during combat in Afghanistan. The winner of the scholarship, Brian Hawkings, embodies the spirit and committment to country exemplified by Captain Freeman.
"It was such a wonderful opportunity to speak with some outstanding students who had outstanding traits of leadership and committment. It's been a joy to be able to come up with the scholarship, and be able to present it in my son's name and honor," said Lisa Freeman.
Hawkings, a leader of the school ROTC program, plans to study psychology at the United States Military Academy.
