A very special project in tribute to a very special American hero. Last August, in Afghanistan, Richmond Hill native, Marine Captain Matthew Freeman, perished in defense of freedom, on behalf of our nation, which he so proudly served, and dearly loved. In what would be his last call home, he told his mother, Lisa, that the Afghan kids he'd met "would rather than pens and paper, than food and water," and he asked her to help. Elevating, now, that battlefield observation to passionate mission, ably assisted by former network correspondent and high school friend, Jim Bunn, and the devoted patriots of the great Richmond Hill community, Lisa Freeman has launched what will become a nationwide, hopefully international, effort to breathe lasting life into son Matthew's dream.
In his honor, Lisa has titled her effort to assist war-zone school children: "The Matthew Freeman Project: Pens and Paper for Peace." Raising money to fund continuing shipments of school supplies, to assist deployed military members in their civil affairs role, helping children realize a brighter future in freedom and peace, with special emphasis on their vital education.
This is a tremendous effort for good, initiated by a devoted and courageous woman and mom, and a tight-knit, caring, America-first community. And now, from Savannah to Beaufort to Statesboro to Brunswick, it's our turn to support her efforts, begun right here at home, in memory of one of our finest, one of our own. You can contribute by going to our website, wtoc.com, and click on The Matthew Freeman Project banner. For those of us in Coastal Georgia and South Carolina, here's a real opportunity to give back, in tribute to a truly great American, and all others in uniform who so nobly and selflessly defend us, no matter the cost, every day.
