It happened around 2pm yesterday afternoon, on Highway 204, a wreck killed a woman heading to the hospital in the back of an ambulance. Chatham County police tell us that the ambulance was transporting the patient from the Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia to a Savannah hospital.

That's when police say the driver, Rhonda Taylor, lost control, crossed the center line, and landed in a ditch. The patient, 46-year-old Martha Smith of Hazlehurst, died at the scene. Police have cited Taylor for the accident. They say she was driving too fast for conditions and the vehicle wasn't safe.

"Post-crash investigation analysis on the equiptment showed that the tires were extremely bald and did not have enough tread to safely be driving on a highway anywhere in the state of Georgia," said police spokesman Mike Wilson.

More charges are pendng because the vehicle is considered defective. Taylor and a second EMT were injured and treated at Memorial Health.
