WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -   Despite forecasts of an active hurricane season, June has been fairly quiet in the tropical Atlantic.  However a strong tropical wave in the western Caribbean Sea could develop into the season's first tropical depression or storm over the next few days.    Hurricane hunters may investigate this system later today.

The disturbance is currently located southwest of Jamaica and moving towards Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.  If this system survives and develops it could move into the Gulf of Mexico over the weekend or early next week.  It is too early though to talk about where it may make landfall or how strong it will get.  It does bear watching though.
