Effingham County came together to remember a young woman killed in a weekend accident.

17-year-old Whitney Newman died early Sunday morning when the driver of the car she was riding in lost control and flipped on Laurel Tree Road and Clyo-Stillwell Road.

On Monday night, a memorial was held for Whitney at Effingham County High School.

Hundreds supported Whitney's mother, but that doesn't take away the pain of losing her daughter; a woman everyone described as always smiling.

"She was always happy. Always upbeat. She wanted to be a school teacher and she was looking forward to prom," Sandra Newman said.

Friends say Whitney never met a stranger. No one expected her life to be cut so short.

"It feels like a dream. I couldn't believe Whitney would be dead because she is such a happy person and everyone loved her," friend Matt Hawasmus said.

Whitney may be gone from the halls of Effingham County High School, but her memory will live on through friends and family.

"Look at all the people here. She was so loved," Kimberly Robbins said.

Sandra Newman knows nothing will bring Whitney back. But she hopes the tragedy sends a message.

"I just want all the kids not to drink. There has got to be a message in this. Just look at Whitney," Sandra Newman said.
