Around 8am this morning a bad accident on I-95, about two miles south of I-16, killed one man. An 18-wheeler, carrying a load of milk, collided with a minivan and burst into flames. Southside Fire Department was among the first to respond to the scene.
"We had an 18-wheeler, it was fully involved," said Lt. Brett Waters with the Southside FD. "One of the victims had gotten out of the trailer already, the victims from the other vehicle had also gotten out of their vehicle and were doing their best to try to stem the tide with a little fire extinguisher. It had already gotten up into the trees."
The passenger in the tractor-trailer managed to get out without injury, and the driver of the minivan walked away without a scratch.
As of 12pm, two of the three southbound lanes were reopened as crews worked to clear the scene. The other lane will remain closed for several hours.
