Guests offended by hotel's tattered American flag

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The holiday weekend has been all about national pride. But one hotel along Interstate 95 is flying an American flag so tattered that outraged drivers contacted WTOC in disgust.

It's hard to miss from the interstate. The Best Western's American flag is shredded on the ends. The hotel is located at the intersection of I-95 and Highway 204.

Jerry Stokes served in the Air Force in the 1970s. He wasn't expecting to find such a worn down flag at the start of his vacation. "When I pulled up and checked into the motel here, I saw that the flag was ragged and needed to be replaced," Stokes said. He said he stays at Best Westerns all over and has never seen an American Flag in such terrible condition.

"They should have taken it down a long time ago. They ought to have more pride in the United States of America," Stokes said.

A viewer contacted WTOC through Facebook to say he got so disgusted seeing the flag on his drive to work everyday that he went in and talked to the manager, but couldn't get anywhere.

WTOC went into the hotel to speak with the manager. He was not there, but the employee was able to contact him by phone. The manager told the employee a maintenance person would remove the flag on Tuesday and that a new flag was on order.

As of midnight on Monday, the tattered flag was still flying.

Jerry stokes has one message for management: "I would say get that flag down and put a new flag up! Respect the United States!"
