SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A Hinesville toddler who was hit by a car while sitting in his stroller on July Fourth has died.
Hinesville police said 23-month-old Dakarai Thompkins was hit by car that was driven 19-year-old Dyshawn Davis, who was intoxicated. He was on life support at Memorial Medical Center.
Davis faces charges of DUI, reckless driving, and serious injury by vehicle.
Davis's charges for serious injury by vehicle were dismissed and upgraded to first-degree vehicular homicide. He appeared before a judge and was denied bond. He will stay in the Liberty County Jail until further notice.
Police said Quinton Cotton, 21, the passenger in the car, is charged with driving on a suspended license after authorities allege he tried to drive the vehicle away from the scene.
Neighbor Luther Frazier saw the entire tragedy unfold. "He knocked the baby stroller, and then the baby flew into the bushes. The girl picked the baby out and brought him into the road. I performed CPR on him there," Frazier said.
