Advisory issued for Polk Street beach

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The beach on Polk Street on Tybee Island is under advisory by the Chatham County Health Department. The advisory covers the northern most part of Tybee Island, at the mouth of the Savannah River from the end of the beach to the jetty, according to a news release.

Water quality tests show the water to contain a higher than normal level of enterococci bacteria, which can increase swimmers' risk of gastrointestinal illness.

The health department warns people to avoid swimming or wading in this area. Fish and other seafood caught from this area should be thoroughly washed with fresh water and thoroughly cooked before eating.

The beach will be retested.
