New commander takes over Coast Guard cutter

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The United States Coast Guard cutter Key Biscayne is dry docked at Savananh Marine Repair and while they are undergoing maitenance they had a change of command ceremony.

On Tuesday, Lieutenant Rana Hernandez took over for Lieutenant Brian Smicklas. Lt. Smicklas has been in command of Key Biscayne for 20 months and says that leaving his crew is tough.

"We caught a lot of smugglers, rescued a lot of migrants, and repatrioted them back to their country," said Lt. Smicklas. "It's easy to walk away from the boat; there's always more boats. It's hard to walk away from the crew."

The Key Biscayne handles the area between the Florida Keys and Cuba.
