STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) - A Georgia attorney was convicted Wednesday of mortgage fraud.
A jury found John R. Thompson guilty of mortgage fraud in federal district court in Statesboro, Ga.
Thompson worked with Brian and Natasha Steptoe to sell a Swainsboro property in August 2007 to a "straw purchaser," according to court documents.
Thompson and the Steptoes submitted a falsified loan application and supporting documents to Bank of America in order to obtain a loan for the purchaser of the property, and the mortgage was approved for more than $400,000, court records show.
Court records show that Thompson and the Steptoes pocketed large amounts of that money.
They also committed more mortgage fraud activity from October 2006 through May 2008, which included defrauding people out of their money while conducting real estate closings, according to court documents.
