SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A suspect was nabbed Monday afternoon in connection with a burglary attempt after about a 2-mile foot chase.
Savannah-Chatham Metro Police said officers were called just before 4 p.m. Monday to the 100 block of Spring Street on a call about a prowler.
The caller told 911 that two men were trying to break into a house. Police got to the house and saw the men who were described by the witness. The men dropped their crowbar and bag and took off running in different directions, according to police.
Two police officers, one of whom is a competitive marathon runner, ran after one of the men for about 2 miles. That officer, who won the Savannah Bridge run this year, chased the suspect through a cemetery, along railroad tracks and through a muddy canal, according to police.
The suspect eventually gave up in exhaustion in the middle of the canal. The officer arrested him and backup units helped pulled him out of the canal.
Arthur Lee Sanders, 20, was charged with burglary, possession of tools during the commission of a crime and a contempt warrant through CCDC.
