Helping our youth learn about the environment

TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) - It sure was a beautiful day to spend at the beach, especially for children who don't usually have the luxury of making the trip. Students from the Wesley Community Centers of Savannah got the opportunity to spend the afternoon with expert biologist Dr. Joe Richardson. The campers spent the day exploring beach ecology.

"We are exploring the beach the animals, and the things that have washed up as well as the things they see out in the water and look along the tide pools and jetties," said Richardson. "There's so much out her to see and do and you don't recognize it all the time and people don't realize it."

After the trip, these campers realize it.

Jeneine Barlow is the camp coordinator and says they want to make sure the children get the same opportunities as other kids their age.

"Some of the children are from low income families and displaced families and we have a rate at Wesley that is reasonable so they can afford to come to our Summer camp every week as well as receive the same as they would at other Summer camps and it's very educational," said Barlow.

Dr. Richardson says he really enjoys teaching children, and couldn't think of a better way to give back but to help the Wesley Community Centers children learn about their environment.

"They do so much good in our community and this is a real small way of saying thanks for all they do," said Richardson.

Dr. Richardson helped youth learn about the wonderful advantages of living near the coast.
