Savannah area jobless rate up slightly

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The preliminary unadjusted unemployment rate in metro Savannah rose to 8.8 percent in June, up 8.3 percent in May, according to the Georgia Department of Labor. The number of unemployed workers in the area is up 837 to 15,397 from 14,560 in the previous month.  

Georgia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped to 10.0 percent in June, from a revised 10.1 percent in May. Data show that this is the 33rd consecutive month Georgia hit above the national unemployment rate, which is now 9.5 percent. The jobless rate in metro Savannah in June 2009 was 8.5 percent.

The number of laid off workers in the Savannah area who filed for unemployment insurance benefits rose to 29.9 percent in June.
