Emergency crews responded to the scene of a major accident on northbound I-95 near the Jimmy Deloach Parkway. As of about 6pm, traffic was backed up for miles in both directions. Witnesses report that a driver in the southbound lane was driving erratically. The vehicle clipped two or three cars before crossing the median into the northbound lane, where it hit a tractor-trailer under the rear axel of the trailer. The car caught fire and burned till firefighters were able to arrive and put the flames out.
The car was completely destroyed and the driver apparently died on impact. A passenger was taken from the car by rescue workers and airlifted to the hospital. It is not yet known whether there were any other passengers in the car.
As cleanup crews work to clear the road, police are trying to figure out how this happened. They're trying to divert traffic around the wreck.
