Rapper Gunned Down

Around 10pm last night, police confirmed that Jason Johnson has died. He'd been taken to Memorial Health's trauma center late yesterday afternoon, after being shot at least once in the right lane of 37th Street. People all over the neighborhood immediately knew the victim was well-known rapper Camoflauge, and that suspicion raced through the rumor mill.

"The mood and the feeling is real sad because he just a young man trying to make it," said Jennifer McLaughlin of Savannah. "And everything that's going on, it just don't make no sense. They just need to stop it."

The shooting didn't just shut down 37th Street, but the entire neighborhood. Yards were filled with dozens of people talking about what happened for hours afterwards.

The the rapper openly claimed to represent a violent lifestyle, having posed with a shotgun on the cover of his CD.

"I make music for the streets," he once said. "I'm just a spokesperson."

Johnson had just recovered from another gunshot wound eight months ago. In 2000, Camoflauge was arrested for murder, but charges were dropped a short time later.

Nobody else was hurt during the shooting this afternoon and police are still looking for leads. People with any information about Jason Johnson's death can call CrimeStoppers at 234-2020.
