Water bill phone scams continue

OKATIE, SC (WTOC) - Phone scams requesting water bill payments continue in Beaufort and Jasper counties.

The Beaufort-Jasper Water and Sewer Authority said consumers are getting calls that appear on their caller ID as if it was from BJWSA, which is called caller ID spoofing.

Callers have been identifying themselves, by name, as specific BJWSA employees, according to BJWSA. Several calls have been abusive.

The scam has stepped up since two weeks ago when BJWSA customers were being asking for credit card information in order to avoid water shut-offs by callers claiming to be with BJWSA.

BJWSA said it does not call its customers bill collections, and that its customer service department will also never call after 5 p.m. for any reason.
