SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - In times of need, the organization Savannah Responds has done just that, since 1961. According to its founder, Pete Liakakis, the greatest need right now is relief from dangerous heat and humidity. So Savannah Reponds has a simple plan, passing out free fans.
Mr. Howard Carlton is no stranger to Savannah heat. He was born and raised here and he says this July has been hotter than usual.
"However we're coming into August and August would be in Savannah one of the hottest months during the season," said Carlton.
The man behind the kindness is also Savannah born and raised and knows where-of he speaks. Like summers of 1952, 1981 and 1986, this summer is one of those hot ones.
"And of course the heat index has been like 115 plus in the Savannah area, so we know that we do have a number of people that don't have air conditionings in their home and so we're distributing the fans like we have in the past," explained Liakakis.
"We're just asking people who are on very low income that are having problems and senior citizens that really need these fans, just come in give us your name and address. That's all that's necessary and we will distribute the fan," he added.
Mr. Carlton has his fan and he's grateful.
"I've been contending with it but however I think this fan would alleviate some of the problems and the strains of the heat," Carlton told WTOC.
People in need can pick up the fans at 17 East Perry St. Pete Liakakis said they have a good supply so he expects they will continue to provide the fans as long as there is a need.
